1960-1969
1963 – Pettit & Griffin, Inc. was incorporated in the State of Maryland.
1963 – First Pettit & Griffin, Inc. residential community breaks ground.
1970-1979
1972 – Howard D. Griffin, founder of Pettit & Griffin, Inc., retires from the business due to illness.
1973 – John Pettit becomes President of Metropolitan Washington Builders Association.
1974 – Howard D. Griffin dies from illness.
1979 – Pettit & Griffin, Inc. is awarded “Medium” volume builder of the year from Suburban Maryland Home Builders Association.
1980-1989
1980 – Flower Hill, a 2025 residential and commercial mixed-use project in Gaithersburg breaks ground.
1984 – Corporate Management, Inc. is formed to offer commercial leasing and property management services to its commercial properties.
1985 – Pettit & Griffin, Inc. breaks ground on a 130,000 SF industrial warehouse and flex space project for lease in Gaithersburg, MD which becomes one of their first ground-up properties.
1987 – Flower Hill Shopping Center, a 93,840 SF retail shopping center development, in the Flower Hill community opens its doors.
1988 – Pettit & Griffin, Inc. celebrates 25 years of business with record sales of $25M.
1989 – Plantations I & II, a 700 unit residential subdivision in Damascus, MD, was completed—this was Pettit & Griffin, Inc.’s second largest project.
1990-1999
1990 – Flower Hill Professional Center, a 76,000SF office and medical property, opens its doors.
1993 – Pettit & Griffin, Inc. receives “Builder & Developer” of the year from Flower Hill Central Corporation.
1994 – John H. Pettit passes away.
1994 – Montgomery College Endowment Scholarship Fund is established in honor of John for students in the Building Trades Technical Program.
1994 – Richard Pettit becomes President and CEO.
1996 – Richard Pettit becomes President of Maryland National Capital Building Industry Association.
2000-2009
2001 – Richard Pettit receives the Milton E. Ketler Award.
2002 – Pettit Development is established as the company’s Land Development and Excavation division.
2003 – Pettit & Griffin, Inc. is restructured for legal and accounting purposes and becomes Pettit Companies.
2010-Present
2011 – Richard Pettit’s son, Brian, joins the family business full-time as the start of the third generation.
